...super sniffer

its for sure dogs love to.. sniff sniff sniff! if you been around dogs you probably been sniffed and thats mostly in your crotch. ack! ha ha. theyre real good at airports for sniffing out drugs and theyre really good for tracking stuff and sniffing out bombs. but did you know all that sniffing could sniff out sickness even before a doctors test could? yep! its true! thats cause a dog is the best sniffer in the world and it could smell 10,000 to 100,000 times more better than a human. WOW! thats a super sniffer for sure!
x
when someones got a sickness inside their body it changes up a lot of chemical stuff and that makes a odor that dogs could smell. a dog could get trained in just only a few weeks to know the healthy smells and the not healthy ones. the dog stays sitting if its healthy stuff and lies down if its not or just goes and sits next to the not healthy one. this gets done mostly by sniffing urine or breath.
x
how good a sniffer is a dog? well just look at this…
x
1. bladder cancer 88% correct from sniffing urine
2. lung cancer 99% correct from sniffing breath
3. breast cancer 87-97 % correct on from sniffing breath
4. type 1 diabetes 65% correct for warning their owner about dangerous drops in blood sugar by barking and whining
5. epilepsy 65% for warning their owner that a seizure is coming by barking and whining
x
WOW! thats pretty good sniffing for sure!
x
right now those research people didnt yet figure what are the chemicals that the dogs could smell. when they get to know just what they are they could do better dog training and find out if someones sick lots more fast. and like all those medicine people say the more early you find a sickness the more fast you could get medicine and the better chance you got to get better.
x
some day dogs are gonna be at doctors offices and be a big part of a check up. a new
sign on the doctors office door is gonna say…THE DOGTOR IS IN! ha ha.
x
for sure super sniffers are mans best friend!
x
what could you think about getting sniffed by a dog on a check up at your doctors office?

  1. I had no idea dogs could sniff out illnesses like this. That's amazing! I'd love to see a dog at the doctor's office. I don't have any pets, so I'd be sure to love up the DOGtor!

    Great post!

  2. That's amazing! I say if dog sniffing can save lives, then it should definitely be supported!

This is a cool post. Thanks for sharing, Lenny!

(The DOGtor is in. LOL, love that!)

  3. Dogs are amazing! I've heard of this before, but I hadn't gone so far as to think about having them at a dogtor's office. :) If I thought it would save my life, I'd definitely do it.

  5. Very cool post, Lenny! It's amazing stuff! I think going to the doctor would be much nicer if you got sniffed by a dogtor instead of getting prodded or poked by the doctor. I wonder if scientists will figure out the chemicals that the dogs can smell and a way to measure them with some machine???

  6. That's amazing. I had no ideas that dog's noses could sniff out illnesses like that. How cool. :)

  7. Really cool post Lenny. Dogs are so amazing. I'd much rather have a dog exam than an MRI! Dogs have so much to offer. Maybe one day instead of putting dogs to sleep, people will train them to sniff out illnesses.

  8. I have heard about seizure dogs who can sense an epileptic seizure coming on, but I didn't know they could sniff out so many other diseases. Wow!

Already at my doctor's office, when you make an appointment, they ask if you want to see "the doctor" or "the physician's assistant." Now I can imagine a third choice: "Would you like to see our Dogtor?" Ha, ha, ha! I wonder how much he charges?

  9. Wow, Lenny! I had no idea dogs could do all that. This was a really great post - and I loved your "dogtor" joke! Ha ha ha. I think the doctor's office would be a much nicer place to kids if they had dogs there. I know my kids would be happier. :-)

  10. Sarmonius the Sniffing St. Bernard Saves the Day... I can see the book already (full of alliteration, of course) hehe.

It really is amazing how keen a dog's sense of smell is. My dog can smell a cheeseburger a mile away and will come give me her big, please-feed-me eyes. Needless to say... she usually gets the last bite.

  13. Hi Lenny - wonderful that we're learning from you too .. amazing creatures are creatures .. and the ones that we can train to help us are extraordinary.

Animals always seem to know when something is wrong don't they .. but these specialist dogs are extra special .. thanks for telling us .. have a great week .. Hilary

  14. Wow, Lenny - I didn't know any of that! Dogs are so amazing. I've heard stories of people who were sick and how their dog never left their side while they were sick - now I wonder if this is part of the reason. I don't think I'd like to get sniffed at the doctor's office, but if it would help them figure out that I was sick faster, I guess I'd be okay with it.

    Have a great week, Lenny!

p.s. I'm answering your question on my blog today - thanks for asking!

  19. I knew about some of the things dogs could sniff out, but I didn't realize about some of those diseases. Great post, Lenny! I'd rather have a dog at a doctor's office than not. They help you relax and smile. :)

  26. Hey Lenny,
Super post! It just makes you realise, even more, just what wonderful animals, dogs are.
    Have a good week, dude.

  27. Lenny,
I didn't know that about dogs being such super sniffers that they could detect illnesses. But then, I think it makes sense [pun intended] because most dogs are really smart. :)

  28. I just read a book called the Art of Racing in the Rain, and the main character is a dog. He knew that one of the human characters was sick because he could smell it. But I thought the author was just making that up. Guess I was wrong! How cool that they can really do that!

  29. I am terrified of all animals with more than two legs, most geese and ducks, and all snakes. So getting sniffed at the DOGTOR? Um, no. :)

  30. I knew that about dogs...now if only they could get scientists to find ways to use smell to determine disease. Interesting post, lenny!

  31. That is amazing! I wonder how more accurate dogs are than tests done by humans.

It would be strange to be diagnosed by a dog. But I'm all for saving more lives and if that's what will do it, then I'm for it.

Thanks for teaching me something new. Happy Friday!

  33. I've heard of service dogs who can tell if their owner is about to have a seizure, but I didn't know dogs could sniff out all these other things - and with such accuracy. It's really incredible! "The dogtor" - very funny :)
