...voice lessons

YIKES! for sure I can’t sing! im a writer (umm…a wanna be writer) not a singer! well guess what i found out? writers got voices too! yep its true! writers got voices just like singers. if you listen you can hear that voice right there on everything you read.....wow how cool is that!
x
whats a writers voice?
x
i like what susan j letham on write101.com says (mostly cause i could understand it…ha ha)
x
“Voice is the way your writing 'sounds' on the page. It has to do with the way you write, the tone you take--friendly, formal, chatty, distant--the words you choose--everyday words or high-brow language--the pattern of your sentences, and the way these things fit in--or not-- with the personality of the narrator character and the style of your story. You might be surprised to know how many beginning writers write out of character, that is, they choose the wrong voice and tone for the purpose they have in mind. …that would be story, not voice.”

wanna read miss susans whole article click here.

could you have more than just one voice?

its sorta like singing cause mostly you dont just sing one note. some people do and they sing way off key too and that pretty hard on your ears. yeeech! ha ha. but mostly you got lots of notes that say what your voice is. you could be soprano or alto or bass and lots of stuff in between. a writing voice is just like that cause its your voice but it could change up for what youre writing. for sure a story about a pretty sunset is gonna be in a way different voice than a story about a flesh eating zombie. yikes! what made me think of that. ha ha. and if you and me wrote the same stuff about that zombie both stories could be way different cause of us having different voices.

where do you find your voice?

for a beginner writer like me im not so sure what my voice sounds like or what its gonna be. the most best way to find out is write…write…write and write some more! it takes time to find out. just like practicing singing voice lessons you gotta practice your writing voice so it could be the best voice for you. right now im one of those boy sopranos but the more stuff i write and the more older i get and finally get all grown up in my body and in my writing for sure im gonna have my very own writers voice. then when you read something i wrote youre gonna hear my voice on a page and say wow thats lenny talking. :)

  1. Hey Lenny, this is such a great post. Voice is very important and I think that you do have a very distinct voice of your own that comes through in your writing.

The secret of writing with a good voice, to me, is to write as if I'm talking to my friends. That way I'm able to be myself and write in a way that people can read my voice as if I'm right next to them. I think that's how you write too because when I read your posts I can hear you very clearly.

  2. Hi Lenny. Awesome post!

I'm still finding my voice but with every story I write I'm edging closer. In answer to your question, where do you find your voice?, I say write, write, and them write some more. Try different genres until you find the one that makes you sing.

  3. I have a pretty particular voice, I think. But it took me a while to find it. It's not easy! It's definitely like growing up, and regardless of having a voice, it's constantly evolving into something better, with hard work.

    Great post!
    HUGS!

  4. Lenny, you have a VERY strong voice for a young writer. You are natural at it. I teach my students: Voice is when the personality of the writer comes through on the page.

The trick when writing fiction is to vary the voice so that your main characters don't all sound alike -- and exactly like you.

YOUR voice is natural. Creating voices for your characters will take more concentration and practice -- at least it does for me. :D

  5. Great post, Lenny. I think I have a few voices, mainly snarky ones. LOL My writing is constantly evolving, so I think my voice will continue to get stronger and vaster.

  6. Hi Lenny,
I hopped over here from the effervescent blog, Klahanie. I love this post on voice. Sometimes I get writers hoarseness which makes it extremely difficult to write. I wonder if there is a cough drop for a raspy pen...or keyboard in this case? BTW, Your voice is very easy on the eyes.

  9. You most definitely have a voice! It'll change and grow as you mature, but it's already there.

The first book I started was absolutely the wrong voice for me. WAY too serious.

  10. Great post Lenny, so true! The voice that you write with is one of my favorite things about you. Especially when you share your made up stories.

  11. I know that I have different voices for the different narrators that I am. However, little bits of the same voice sneaks through in every piece of writing. Great post, lenny!

  13. Wonderful post! Voices, very important in the writing world. Each writer has their own voice and to have it heard it must be written beautifully.

  14. Hey Lenny!
Another terrific posting! I write in many different 'voices'. I firmly believe that writing should come across as the writer 'talking' in an intimate, one-to-one style. I would say that writing can most definitely 'sing' and 'dance':-)
    Have a good week, dude.
Kind wishes to you, Mr. Gary:-)

  15. Excellent post Lenny! My crit buddies say I do really well with humor and that I have a light, funny voice when it comes to writing. I guess only time will really tell. =)

  16. I have been writing for a long time and I am still fine tuning my voice. I think you should continue to grow in your voice the same way you continue to grow in your writing. When I go back and read things I wrote a long time ago, I can see the various ways in which I have grown up in my writing.

    Great post Lenny!

  17. Great post Lenny. I think voice is important, but it can take a while to find. I think the key is just writing. Sooner or later your voice flows as easy as tapping the keys. :)

  18. Hi Lenny .. you've described it exactly when you've extracted Susan's words .. this is so true .. it's finding our voice in all ways - including our confidence in our own abilities .. this is an adult block too!!

Really excellent post and ideas .. thanks so much .. Hilary

  19. Lenny~You have a wonderful voice both in your blog in your manuscript. I'm really enjoying reading A DRAGONFLY STORY. Your characters have distinct voices. Blooper sounds a little like you. :) I think it's important to "become" that character when you are writing their dialogue...but really I'm a beginner too.

    Wonderful post!

I think I've found my voice, but I'm still working on making it stronger! :)

  22. Great thoughts, Lenny! I'm still working on my voice, but I think it's getting clearer.

  23. I can't sing, either!

I think you have a voice already and it's very upbeat and encourages others.

  24. How did you get so smart? This is an excellent post.

  25. It's taken me a while to find my voice but I think I have one. I think! This post is great!

  26. I think I have my own special voice. However, my setting takes place in Boston and Southern California, so I have to adapt my writing voice so that its relevant to both cultures.

  27. You certainly have a blog voice, Lenny. :o) Besides, this was a wonderful way to explain author voice! I loved how you put it. Thanks for sharing.

My voice is there, but I have to remember to change it with each book, to find or add the voice of the main character.

Hope you're doing well, Lenny! Sending big hugs!

  30. Every time I swing by to read your blog I get excited. You know why? Because you pick up on things at such a young age that it has taken others of us a long time to learn. You keep going on this writing path, Lenny and you'll be a best-selling author one day, I have no doubt. :)

  33. This a great, insightful, and humorous post, Lenny. What is my voice? Well, judging by how often I've been rejected by agents, I would say my voice has a sore throat!
